Overview
Alibaba Group is a Chinese multinational technology company and the largest e-commerce operator in China. Founded in 1999 by Jack Ma and 17 co-founders in a Hangzhou apartment, it began as Alibaba.com, an English-language B2B marketplace connecting Chinese manufacturers and wholesalers with international buyers. It has since grown into an ecosystem spanning three flagship marketplaces — Alibaba.com (B2B wholesale), Taobao (C2C), and Tmall (B2C) — alongside cloud computing, logistics, and (formerly affiliated) fintech via Alipay. Alibaba owns the world’s two largest online marketplaces by gross merchandise value, with Taobao ranked No. 1 and Tmall No. 2.
What they’re known for
Two things above all. First, B2B wholesale sourcing: Alibaba.com is the default global platform for buyers to source products directly from Chinese (and increasingly worldwide) suppliers and manufacturers, which made “sourcing from Alibaba” synonymous with wholesale importing. Second, Singles’ Day (11.11): the shopping festival Alibaba pioneered in 2009 became the largest 24-hour online retail event on earth, at its peak generating tens of billions of dollars in a single day and setting the template for e-commerce mega-sales globally.
History
- 1999 — Jack Ma and 17 co-founders launch Alibaba.com, a B2B marketplace, in Hangzhou; ~$60,000 in initial capital.
- 1999–2000 — Raises $5M led by Goldman Sachs, then $20M from SoftBank.
- 2003 — Launches Taobao, a C2C marketplace, to fend off eBay in China.
- 2004 — Launches Alipay escrow payment service to build buyer trust.
- 2008 — Launches Tmall (Taobao Mall) as a B2C platform for brands and official stores.
- 2009 — Creates the “11.11” Singles’ Day shopping festival.
- 2014 — Lists on the NYSE, raising $25B — the largest IPO in history at the time.
- 2021 — Fined a record RMB 18.2B (~$2.8B) by China’s SAMR for antitrust “choose one from two” exclusivity abuses.
- 2023–2025 — Reorganizes into independent business units; Taobao and Tmall Group operate as the core China commerce engine.
Business model
Alibaba runs an asset-light, third-party (3P) marketplace model — it does not own most of the inventory sold; it connects buyers and sellers and monetizes the transactions and traffic.
- Taobao (C2C): Charges sellers no listing/transaction fee. Revenue comes overwhelmingly from advertising — SEO-like paid placement where merchants bid for buyer visibility (reported to be roughly 80% of Taobao revenue).
- Tmall (B2C): Charges brands an upfront deposit (~RMB 150,000), annual fees (~RMB 30,000–60,000), plus a commission and technology service fee typically in the range of ~0.5%–5% of GMV.
- Alibaba.com (B2B): Monetizes via paid membership/supplier memberships (e.g. Gold Supplier), value-added services, and advertising.
- Alipay: Charges a payment-processing fee (~0.55% per transaction) via its escrow mechanism.
The blended take rate (customer management revenue ÷ online GMV) has been under pressure as GMV growth shifted toward lower-monetization Taobao merchants and new lower-take models.
Why it succeeded
- Solved trust in a low-trust market. Alipay’s escrow model (buyer’s money released only after delivery) removed the biggest barrier to online shopping in early-2000s China, and directly out-competed eBay’s approach on Taobao.
- Local fit beat a global incumbent. Taobao’s free-to-list model, local customer service, and instant-messaging (Wangwang) tools drove eBay out of China — a rare defeat for a US tech giant abroad.
- Ecosystem, not a single app. By owning B2B (Alibaba.com), C2C (Taobao), B2C (Tmall), payments (Alipay), logistics (Cainiao) and cloud, Alibaba captured value across the whole commerce stack.
- Manufacturing gateway. Alibaba.com became the world’s front door to Chinese wholesale supply, riding China’s rise as “the world’s factory.”
- Event-driven demand engineering. Singles’ Day turned a made-up “holiday” into a demand engine that trained hundreds of millions of consumers to shop online. See the Taobao/Tmall 11.11 results and ecomcrew history.
Notable facts
- 2014 NYSE IPO raised $25 billion — the largest IPO in world history at the time (priced at $68/share, ~$231B market value).
- FY2025 group revenue was around RMB 1.02 trillion (~US$148B).
- In the June-2025 quarter, China retail (Taobao + Tmall) revenue grew ~10% YoY to RMB 89.25B (~US$12.46B).
- Singles’ Day 2024: 45 brands each surpassed RMB 1 billion in GMV, and 589 brands crossed RMB 100 million (up from 402 a year earlier) — though Alibaba no longer discloses a total GMV figure.
- 2021 antitrust fine of RMB 18.2B (~$2.8B) was the largest in Chinese antitrust history, equal to ~4% of 2019 domestic sales.
