Overview

Cdiscount is France’s largest homegrown online marketplace and, after Amazon, the country’s second-biggest e-commerce destination, drawing more than 20 million unique visitors a month and holding close to 9% of French e-commerce. Founded in Bordeaux in 1998 by the Charle brothers and majority-owned since 2000 by the retail conglomerate Casino Group (through the Dutch-listed holding Cnova N.V.), it sells electronics, home goods, appliances, toys, and sports gear at aggressively low prices. Over the past decade it has pivoted from a first-party discounter into a marketplace-led platform, and spun its underlying technology into Octopia, a B2B “marketplace-in-a-box” sold to other retailers across Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

What they’re known for

Cdiscount is known as the French value champion — the domestic alternative to Amazon built around one promise: the lowest price wins. Its catalog-driven marketplace is unusual in that sellers do not control their own product listings; Cdiscount owns the product data and shows only the single best price to shoppers, making pricing (not listing optimization or brand storytelling) the primary lever for winning the sale. Beyond retail, it is increasingly known for Octopia, its marketplace-as-a-service arm that lets other retailers (including Casino’s own grocery banner Casino.fr) launch a marketplace on Cdiscount’s seller network and infrastructure.

History

  • 1998 — Founded in Bordeaux by brothers Hervé, Christophe, and Nicolas Charle as a discount online seller of CDs, DVDs, and media.
  • 2000 — Casino Group takes a majority stake, integrating Cdiscount into the retailer’s e-commerce strategy.
  • 2008–2011 — Casino raises its holding to ~79.6% (2008) and then buys out the founders’ remaining shares (January 2011), reaching ~99.6% ownership.
  • 2011 — Launches its third-party seller marketplace (“C le Marché”), opening the catalog to international sellers.
  • 2014 — Cdiscount folded into Cnova N.V., a Casino e-commerce holding listed on Euronext.
  • 2021 — Launches Octopia, its modular marketplace-as-a-service and fulfilment solution; Casino.fr becomes an early client, launching a food marketplace on Octopia’s tech.
  • 2023 — As part of Casino Group’s debt restructuring, plans announced to accelerate Cdiscount’s transition to a marketplace model.
  • 2024 — Marketplace reaches ~64% of product GMV; new brand identity rolled out (June 2024). Control of Casino Group passes to France Retail Holdings (EP Equity Investment / Fimalac).
  • 2025 — Cnova delisted from Euronext Paris (effective 20 June 2025) after a court-approved buyout of minority shareholders.

Business model

Cdiscount runs a hybrid model: a shrinking first-party (1P) direct-sales business alongside a fast- growing third-party (3P) marketplace that now accounts for roughly two-thirds of product GMV (64% in Q4 2024, up from ~38% in 2019). Marketplace sellers pay a monthly subscription of about €39.99 plus a category-based commission generally ranging from roughly 4.5% to 20% of the transaction (commission is charged on the full amount, including shipping). Revenue also comes from value-added seller services — Cdiscount Fulfilment (logistics), Cdiscount Advertising (retail media), and financial services — plus subscriptions from its ~2 million-member loyalty program (Cdiscount à volonté). A third leg is Octopia, which licenses the marketplace technology, seller network, and fulfilment to other retailers as a B2B revenue stream. The strategic shift toward the asset-light marketplace and services model is central to parent Casino Group’s post-restructuring turnaround.

Why it succeeded

  • A credible French alternative to Amazon. Backed by Casino Group’s capital and brand, Cdiscount built the domestic scale (20M+ monthly visitors, ~9% of French e-commerce, ~10M active customers) that most national challengers never reach, per the Casino Group brand page and third-party market guides.
  • A clear value proposition. The relentless “lowest price wins” Buy Box and value-driven positioning resonated with price-sensitive French shoppers, differentiating it from Amazon on price rather than trying to out-scale it.
  • Well-timed marketplace pivot. Opening the marketplace in 2011 and steadily shifting GMV toward 3P (from ~38% in 2019 to ~64% by 2024) improved margins and product breadth without the capital cost of holding inventory — the strategy Kantar and Casino cite as core to the group’s recovery.
  • Productizing its own infrastructure. Spinning the marketplace tech into Octopia turned an internal capability into a sellable B2B product, adding a services revenue stream and validating the platform (e.g. Casino.fr’s food marketplace built on Octopia).

Notable facts

  • ~20 million unique visitors per month and roughly 9% of France’s e-commerce market share.
  • Around 13,000–14,000 marketplace merchants, with about one-third based in France.
  • Marketplace GMV was up +9% in Q4 2024 and reached ~64% of product GMV (vs. ~38% in 2019).
  • Reported ~€4.1bn GMV in 2021; ECDB estimates ~US$2.54bn net sales in 2025.
  • Monthly seller subscription ~€39.99 plus category commissions of roughly 4.5%–20%.
  • Octopia launched in 2021 and operates across Europe, Africa, and Latin America with 450+ employees.
  • Cnova (79% owner of Cdiscount) was delisted from Euronext Paris effective 20 June 2025.
