Overview

Chrono24 is the world’s leading online marketplace for luxury watches, headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, with further offices in Berlin, New York, Miami, Tokyo and Hong Kong. It is a pure third-party marketplace — it holds no inventory of its own — matching roughly 3,000 vetted professional dealers and tens of thousands of private sellers with around nine million monthly buyers across more than 150 countries, in 22 languages. The site carries on the order of half a million to 670,000 live listings at any time (667,819 at the time of capture), covering new, pre-owned and vintage timepieces, and the company says more than 1.6 million watches have been sold through it since 2003. After a January 2025 restructuring it employs about 350 people, and it described 2024 as a clearly profitable year.

What they’re known for

Chrono24’s reputation rests on two trust mechanisms rather than on selection alone, because a €10,000 watch bought sight-unseen from a stranger abroad is exactly the kind of transaction the open internet handles badly.

  • A free escrow account with a post-delivery hold. Buyers pay Chrono24, not the seller. The money sits in Chrono24’s escrow account and is only released 14 days after delivery when buying from a professional dealer, or up to 7 days after the day of delivery when buying from a private seller — deliberately matched to the buyer’s inspection and return window. Chrono24 states plainly that it “provides Escrow Service for free”; the service (formerly branded Trusted Checkout) is funded by the seller-side commission, not by a buyer fee.
  • Chrono24 Certified, a two-path authenticity programme. Launched in April 2024, it puts a verified watchmaker between seller and buyer. Partner Certified watches are checked and certified before being listed, by a watchmaker working with or for a pre-screened dealer, at no cost to the buyer. Where Partner Certified is not offered, the buyer can add Chrono24 Certified at the point of sale for $249: the seller ships the watch to a Chrono24 certification centre, where the company’s own in-house watchmakers run the check and forward it on. Both paths use the same published authenticity definition, standardised check (authenticity, function test, box-and-papers, plus a screen against stolen-watch databases), digital Certificate of Authenticity and authenticity guarantee. More than 60,000 certified watches are listed, flagged with a dark-blue “C” icon.

Buyer protection sits alongside both: if the watch arrives defective or not as the seller described, the buyer has 14 days from delivery to notify Chrono24’s support team and get the full purchase price plus original shipping refunded. Purchases from professional dealers also carry the statutory 14-day right of withdrawal with no reason required; purchases from private sellers do not, which is precisely why the private-seller escrow hold exists.

History

  • 2003 — Chrono24.com is founded in Germany, initially as a side project, at a time when secondhand watch trading happened mostly on eBay.
  • 2010 — Tim Stracke, Dirk Schwartz and Michael Krkoska take over the platform and professionalise it as the pre-owned luxury watch market starts to take off; the company grows out of Karlsruhe on the back of aggressive multilingual SEO.
  • 2016 — Holger Felgner joins as co-CEO alongside Stracke.
  • 2017 — Annual transaction volume passes roughly €1 billion, with over 90% of listings coming from professional dealers.
  • 2019–2020 — Trading volume reaches about €1.5 billion in 2019, then rises roughly 25% to around €2 billion in 2020 as the pandemic pushes watch buying online.
  • Aug 2021 — Raises €100M (~$118M) in a Series C led by General Atlantic with Aglaé Ventures (the Arnault family’s investment arm), joining existing backers Insight Partners and Sprints Capital. The round values Chrono24 above $1 billion, making it the first digital watch marketplace unicorn; total funding passes $236M.
  • 2023 — Marks its 20th anniversary and launches ChronoPulse, a luxury-watch market index built on its own real transaction data.
  • Jan 2024 — Carsten Keller, previously a key architect of Zalando’s marketplace model, takes over as CEO from co-CEOs Tim Stracke and Holger Felgner.
  • Apr 2024 — Launches the Certified programme (Partner Certified and Chrono24 Certified), live in Europe with a US rollout in Q2 2024.
  • Oct 2024 — New dealer price structure takes effect: subscription packages sized by listing count, plus a per-sale commission.
  • Jan 2025 — Streamlines its organisational structure, cutting about 110 roles to roughly 350 employees across Europe, the Americas and Asia; states it achieved profitability in 2024.
  • 2025 — Adds a full consignment option (“Let Chrono24 Sell It for You”) for private sellers, with certification included.
  • Jul 2025 – May 2026 — José Gaztelu joins as Chief Growth Officer in July 2025, leads the company from September 2025 after Keller’s departure, and is appointed CEO effective 6 May 2026, with Tobias Hartmann chairing the board.

Business model

Chrono24 never owns the watches, so all of its revenue is marketplace revenue, split across three streams. Professional dealers pay a monthly Professional Package priced by the number of active listings — from €199 for up to 25 watches to €2,199 for up to 1,000, with the package size auto-adjusting as inventory changes — plus a commission on every completed sale, calculated per watch from the brand, price and condition (co-founder Tim Stracke has put the dealer transaction fee in the 3–5% range depending on seller size). Private sellers list for free and pay a flat 6.5% commission, or can hand the whole sale over on consignment for 14–25%, which bundles certification and a faster payout. On top of that sit paid top placements for dealers and the optional $249 Chrono24 Certified authentication that a buyer can add at checkout. The escrow service itself is free to both sides — it is the retention mechanism, not a revenue line — and dealers are onboarded on a 30-day trial with commission-only pricing.

Why it succeeded

Chrono24 won a category where trust, not logistics, is the binding constraint. A luxury watch is small, extremely valuable, easy to counterfeit and frequently sold across borders between parties who will never meet — which is why a marketplace that simply lists inventory (as eBay did) could never take the high end of the market. The escrow hold is the sharpest expression of the fix: by keeping the buyer’s money for 14 days after a dealer delivery and 7 days after a private-sale delivery, Chrono24 aligns the payout with the exact window in which a buyer can still return a watch that is defective or not as described, and it gives that protection away free. Layered on top are hard seller vetting (dealers must submit photo ID, commercial register entry, business address and tax number; private listings need proof-of-ownership photos of the watch set to specified times), a 40-person quality and security team, insured shipping, and since 2024 the Certified programme, which moves authentication from a promise into a watchmaker-signed digital certificate.

That combination let it scale internationally in a way inventory-owning competitors could not: 22 languages, ~9 million monthly users, buyers and sellers in 150 countries and a Trustpilot score of 4.7/5 across roughly 201,000 reviews, all without holding stock. Backed by General Atlantic and the Arnault family’s Aglaé Ventures at a $1B+ valuation, it also survived the 2023–2024 correction in secondary watch prices — trimming ~110 roles in January 2025 while reporting profitability for 2024, a rarer outcome than it sounds among resale marketplaces of its size.
