Overview

eBay Australia (ebay.com.au) is the local arm of eBay Inc., the San Jose-based global online marketplace founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995. Launched in Sydney in 1999, it is a horizontal, general-merchandise marketplace connecting Australian buyers and sellers across auction and fixed-price (“Buy It Now”) formats. It is Australia’s most-visited shopping site, drawing roughly 11 million unique Australian visitors a month and around 61 million monthly visits, and is notable for being the one market in the world where eBay still leads Amazon.

What they’re known for

Being Australia’s dominant general marketplace. eBay has led Australian e-commerce since its 1999 launch and remains the country’s number-one shopping destination despite Amazon’s 2017 arrival — Australia is described as the only country where both eBay and Amazon operate and eBay is still in front. It is also known for its blend of consumer-to-consumer (C2C) selling and a heavy business presence: around 40,000 small businesses sell on the platform and 80 of Australia’s top 100 online retailers operate there. More recently it has become known for its Authenticity Guarantee — free third-party verification (via its Sneaker Con acquisition) of sneakers and, later, luxury designer footwear.

History

  • 1995 — eBay founded in the US by Pierre Omidyar (originally “AuctionWeb”).
  • 1999 — eBay.com.au launches in Sydney; the first item sold was a Harman Kardon amplifier shipped to a US buyer.
  • 2009 — eBay marks 10 years in Australia.
  • 2014 — 15-year milestone; the platform has shifted from pure auction house toward a fixed-price retail powerhouse.
  • 2017 — 18th anniversary; launches AI image search, “Find it on eBay” and eBay Guaranteed Delivery. Amazon launches in Australia the same year, but eBay retains its lead.
  • 2020 — eBay.com.au turns 21.
  • 2021 — eBay acquires Sneaker Con’s authentication business and brings its Authenticity Guarantee to Australia.
  • 2022 — Authenticity Guarantee extended to luxury designer sneakers (Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and more).
  • 2025-2026 — Expands sneaker authentication and free international delivery; global focus categories (collectibles, trading cards, parts, refurbished) drive growth.

Business model

eBay is a pure third-party (3P) marketplace — it holds no inventory and instead connects independent sellers with buyers, monetising primarily through seller fees. In Australia the core charge is a Final Value Fee (FVF) taken on each sale: about 13.4% on the first AU$4,000 of the sale price and 2.4-2.5% on the portion above AU$4,000, capped at roughly AU$440 per item (lower caps and discounted rates apply to Store subscribers). Additional revenue comes from Store subscriptions, promoted/advertised listings, an international sales fee (~1.1%) on cross-border orders, and GST on fees where applicable. Sellers get a monthly allowance of free listings, so eBay’s take is weighted toward completed transactions rather than listing fees.

Why it succeeded

  • First-mover and network effects: By launching in 1999 and building the largest local buyer-seller base early, eBay locked in a two-sided network that later entrants (including Amazon in 2017) have struggled to displace — webretailer’s data still ranks eBay first in Australia by a wide margin.
  • Breadth over specialisation: As a horizontal marketplace spanning new and used, auction and Buy-It-Now, it captures both bargain-hunting C2C sellers and major retailers (80 of the top 100 Australian online retailers), giving unmatched selection.
  • Trust investments: Buyer protection plus the Authenticity Guarantee — outsourced expert verification for sneakers and luxury goods — reduce the counterfeit and fraud risk that plagues high-value used-goods categories, deepening buyer confidence.
  • Mobile and product innovation: Early moves into mobile (70%+ of traffic), AI image search and guaranteed delivery kept the experience competitive as consumer expectations rose.
