Overview

IndiaMART (legally IndiaMART InterMESH Ltd) is India’s largest online B2B marketplace, headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Founded in 1996 by cousins Dinesh Agarwal and Brijesh Agrawal, it connects small and medium enterprise (SME) buyers with suppliers of industrial goods, machinery, raw materials, and services across the country. As of FY25 the platform hosts roughly 8.4 million supplier storefronts, hundreds of millions of registered buyers, and tens of millions of listed products across dozens of industry groups. It was the first online B2B marketplace to go public in India, listing on the BSE and NSE in July 2019, and holds an estimated ~60% share of India’s organized B2B e-commerce market (per KPMG).

What they’re known for

IndiaMART is distinctively known for being a lead-generation and discovery platform rather than a transactional marketplace. Buyers post “Request for Quote” enquiries or browse listings for free; suppliers pay to receive and respond to those buyer leads. The platform does not typically charge a commission or take-rate on the actual sale — deals are negotiated and settled directly between buyer and supplier off-platform. This “matchmaking” model, tuned to India’s fragmented, price-sensitive, cash-and-relationship-driven SME economy, is its signature. It’s often described as the “Alibaba of India” for domestic wholesale trade.

History

  • 1996 — Dinesh Agarwal and Brijesh Agrawal found IndiaMART.com from a Delhi flat with about Rs 40,000, initially as an export-oriented business directory (India had ~15,000 internet users at the time).
  • 2003 — Launches TrustSEAL, a supplier verification/trust product.
  • 2008-2009 — Pivots from an export focus to the domestic Indian B2B market after the global financial crisis; Intel Capital invests (~US$10M, its longest-tenured institutional backer).
  • 2016 — Amadeus Capital Partners and other investors back the company ahead of its public listing.
  • July 2019 — IPO of ~Rs 474-475 crore; oversubscribed ~36x; shares jump ~40% on debut. First Indian online B2B marketplace to go public.
  • 2021 — Named in the US Trade Representative’s “Notorious Markets” report over third-party listings of counterfeit goods.
  • Jan-Apr 2022 — Acquires 100% of accounting-software firm Busy Infotech for Rs 500 crore (completed April 2022); also takes a ~27% stake in Vyapar (Simply Vyapar Apps).
  • FY25 — Continues double-digit revenue growth; paying suppliers reach ~217,000 and supplier storefronts ~8.4 million.

Business model

IndiaMART monetizes suppliers, not buyers. Its primary revenue stream is recurring supplier subscriptions (packages such as Dynamic, Maximiser, Star Supplier and Leading Supplier) that grant enhanced visibility, higher search ranking, verified trust badges (TrustSEAL), and a flow of buyer leads. Additional revenue comes from pay-per-lead purchases, “Request for Quote” access, advertising/priority placement, and payment-facilitation services. Crucially, it is a third-party (3P) marketplace that does not take inventory positions and does not charge a percentage take-rate on completed transactions — buyers and suppliers transact directly. Because subscriptions are billed in advance, the company carries a large deferred-revenue balance (Rs 1,678 crore as of March 2025), which acts as a forward indicator of revenue. The Busy Infotech (accounting software) subsidiary adds a complementary SaaS revenue line.

Why it succeeded

IndiaMART succeeded by fitting its model to the realities of Indian SME commerce rather than importing a Western transactional-marketplace playbook. As the TechCrunch coverage of its IPO noted, it was a rare profitable, 23-year-old tech company at listing — proof that a discovery/lead-gen model can be durably cash-generative. Key drivers: (1) a free, low-friction experience for buyers that built enormous top-of-funnel scale (hundreds of millions of buyers); (2) monetizing the far smaller, higher-intent supplier side through advance-paid subscriptions, producing predictable deferred revenue and healthy ~30-39% net margins; (3) first-mover advantage and network effects that compounded into ~60% market share (per KPMG); and (4) avoiding the capital-intensive logistics, inventory, and payment-settlement burdens that weigh on transactional marketplaces. Its main ongoing challenge, reflected in user complaints about fake or resold leads and in a 2021 USTR counterfeit-listings citation, is lead and listing quality — an inherent tension of a hands-off intermediary model.
