Overview
Etsy is an American e-commerce company that runs the world’s best-known marketplace for handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies. Founded in a Brooklyn apartment in 2005 and still headquartered there, it operates a purely third-party, two-sided marketplace: independent sellers list their own creative goods and Etsy connects them with buyers, taking a cut of each sale. As of its FY2025 reporting, the Etsy marketplace connected roughly 5.6 million active sellers with about 86.5 million active buyers across more than 100 million listings, generating $10.5 billion of Etsy-marketplace GMS. The company is publicly traded on Nasdaq under the ticker ETSY, and its mission tagline is “Keep Commerce Human.”
What they’re known for
Etsy is famous as the go-to destination for handmade, one-of-a-kind, and vintage products — jewelry, apparel, home decor, art, custom gifts, and craft supplies made or curated by individual creators rather than mass manufacturers. Its distinctive angle is the “handmade” moat: unlike Amazon or Shein, Etsy positions itself as a marketplace of human makers. In 2024 it doubled down on this identity, purging millions of non-compliant listings and rolling out “Creativity Standards” that require sellers to disclose their role (Made by, Designed by, Sourced by, or Handpicked by). It is the category-defining marketplace that many “handmade / craft” competitors are measured against.
History
- 2005 — Founded by Rob Kalin, Chris Maguire, and Haim Schoppik; the marketplace launches on June 18, 2005, in Brooklyn.
- 2007 — Hits ~100,000 sellers, driven by strong organic community growth.
- 2015 — IPOs on Nasdaq (April 16) at a ~$1.8B valuation, raising ~$237M.
- 2017 — Josh Silverman becomes CEO and begins a profitability-focused turnaround.
- 2019 — Acquires Reverb, the musical-instrument marketplace, launching its “House of Brands” strategy.
- 2021 — Acquires Depop (Gen Z fashion resale) for ~$1.625B and Elo7 (Brazil handmade) for ~$217M.
- 2020–2021 — Pandemic-driven surge (face masks and at-home spending) roughly triples revenue.
- 2023 — Sells Elo7, beginning the unwind of the House of Brands.
- 2024 — Reinforces its handmade mission with Creativity Standards and stricter enforcement.
- 2025 — Sells Reverb (June); GMS softens amid weak discretionary spending.
- 2026 — Kruti Patel Goyal becomes CEO (Jan 1); Silverman moves to Executive Chair. eBay agrees to acquire Depop for ~$1.2B (announced Feb, expected to close Q2 2026). Q1 2026 marks a return to marketplace GMS growth.
Business model
Etsy is a pure third-party (3P) marketplace — it holds no inventory and does not sell its own goods, so it makes money only when sellers make money. Revenue comes from a mix of transaction fees, listing fees ($0.20 per listing), payment processing, optional Etsy Ads / Offsite Ads, subscriptions (Etsy Plus), and services. Its consolidated “revenue take rate” (revenue ÷ GMS) rose to 24.2% in FY2025, up from 22.3% in 2024, as the company layered in more services and ad revenue. Revenue splits into Marketplace revenue ($2.0B, mostly transaction/listing fees) and Services revenue ($876M, ads and subscriptions). New sellers also pay a one-time $15 setup fee introduced in 2024.
Why it succeeded
Etsy succeeded by owning a defensible niche the giants could not easily replicate: genuinely handmade, vintage, and personalized goods backed by a passionate maker community rather than commodity inventory. Josh Silverman’s 2017-onward turnaround made the platform disciplined and profitable, focusing on search, marketing efficiency, and buyer frequency and growing revenue from ~$441M to ~$2.8B. The COVID period supercharged this — face masks and at-home spending brought tens of millions of new buyers. As competition from Amazon Handmade, Shein, and Temu intensified, Etsy leaned harder into the “handmade moat” (Forbes) with Creativity Standards, betting that authenticity and human connection are what keep it distinctive. Even through the post-pandemic slowdown, this focus supported a very high take rate and a return to marketplace growth by early 2026.
