Overview
Gumtree is one of the UK’s best-known online classifieds marketplaces, launched in 2000 as a community noticeboard for expats arriving in London and now a mass-market platform for buying and selling second-hand goods, cars, property rentals, jobs and local services. Headquartered in Richmond, London, it operates primarily in the UK (with historic and independently-owned sister sites in Australia, South Africa and Ireland). After nearly two decades under eBay ownership, Gumtree became independent in 2021 and, since late 2024, has been owned by Chinese classifieds giant 58.com and private-equity firm Ocean Link.
What they’re known for
Gumtree is the UK’s answer to Craigslist: a generalist, hyper-local classifieds board where the majority of listings are free and transactions happen face-to-face. It is culturally synonymous with buying and selling second-hand items locally — from used cars and furniture to flatshares and odd jobs — and is one of the most-visited classifieds destinations in Britain. Cars and vehicles are a particularly strong vertical, reinforced by its former sibling Motors.co.uk under the eBay Motors Group banner.
History
- 2000 — Founded in London by Michael Pennington and Simon Crookall as a classifieds and community site for Australian, New Zealand and South African expats; the name refers to the eucalyptus “gum tree.”
- 2004–2007 — International expansion into Poland, Germany, Italy, the US and other markets.
- May 2005 — Acquired by eBay (as part of an ~$81.6M purchase covering Gumtree, LoQUo and opusforum).
- 2013 — Introduces bulk dealer accounts for motor trade sellers.
- July 2020 — eBay agrees to sell its Classifieds Group, including Gumtree, to Norway’s Adevinta in a ~$9bn cash-and-shares deal (completed 2021).
- 2021 — UK regulators (CMA) require divestment; Adevinta sells Gumtree UK and Motors.co.uk to O3 Industries and Novum Capital (Dec 1, 2021), making Gumtree independent again.
- Sept 2024 — O3 Industries and Novum Capital sell Gumtree to Ocean Link and its portfolio company 58.com; a brand-revival and reinvestment push follows.
Business model
Gumtree runs a freemium classifieds model. Listing in most categories is free to maximise supply and traffic, and the platform monetises through: (1) listing/insertion fees in high-value categories such as vehicles, property, jobs and services; (2) promotional upgrades sold à la carte or in tiered packages (Plus, Featured, Premium) plus boosts like Bump Up, Highlight, Urgent and Top Ad; (3) display advertising — banner and native ad impressions/clicks against its large monthly audience; and (4) referral fees from partners (e.g. insurance comparison via Compare the Market). It is fundamentally a third-party (3P) marketplace connecting independent buyers and sellers rather than holding inventory, though business/dealer subscriptions add a B2C/B2B layer. Premium ad placements have been cited as roughly 70% of revenue.
Why it succeeded
Gumtree’s durability comes from a classic classifieds network effect: free listings drove enormous liquidity of supply, which drew buyers, which drew more sellers, entrenching it as the default UK site for local second-hand trade. Its generalist, hyper-local positioning let it span categories (goods, cars, property, jobs, community) that specialist rivals only partly covered. eBay’s ownership (2005–2021) gave it scale, brand reach and a strong motors business. Even after a regulator-forced divestment cut it off from eBay’s infrastructure — forcing an 18-month rebuild of core functions as an independent company, as Raconteur documents — the brand’s recognition and audience proved valuable enough to attract successive owners, culminating in acquisition by global classifieds operator 58.com, which is now reinvesting in payments, delivery and marketing to modernise it.
