Overview

Leboncoin (“the good corner”) is France’s leading online classified-ads marketplace, launched in 2006 as a French adaptation of the Swedish site Blocket. It connects individuals and professionals locally to buy and sell across a huge range of categories — second-hand goods, cars, real estate, jobs, holiday rentals and services. It is one of the most-visited websites in France (routinely cited as the country’s #1 e-commerce site and second most-visited online destination behind Amazon), with roughly 28-30 million monthly unique visitors. Leboncoin is the flagship French brand of Adevinta, a pan-European classifieds group that was taken private by a consortium led by Permira and Blackstone in 2024.

What they’re known for

Leboncoin is famous for its hyper-local, generalist, “list anything” model. Unlike category specialists, it became the default place in France to sell a couch, a car, an apartment lease, or a job — all on one site organised around geographic proximity (its interface centres on a map of France so users see items near them). More than one French person in two visits the site each month, and it is estimated that over 70% of the French population has used it, making it a genuine cultural institution rather than just a website. Historically it built its moat on being free for individuals: no listing fee and no commission on private sales, monetising instead through paid visibility and professional accounts.

History

  • 2006 — Founded on 28 April by Olivier Aizac with a team of two, as a French clone of Schibsted’s Swedish site Blocket; launched 50/50 by Norwegian group Schibsted and French firm Spir Communication.
  • 2009 — Reaches profitability.
  • 2010 — Schibsted takes full control of the site.
  • 2013 — Antoine Jouteau takes over leadership as the group scales.
  • 2016 onward — Expands via acquisitions into real estate, recruitment and second-hand fashion verticals.
  • 2019 — Schibsted spins off its international classifieds into Adevinta, listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange; leboncoin Group acquires Argus Group to dominate France’s used-car market.
  • 2020 — Spir Communication exits; Adevinta becomes sole parent.
  • 2021 — Adevinta buys eBay Classifieds Group (~$13bn), becoming a global classifieds leader.
  • 2024 — A consortium led by Permira and Blackstone takes Adevinta private in a ~€14 billion buyout; company revenue reaches ~€1 billion (TTC).
  • 2026 — Celebrates its 20th anniversary; claims 100+ AI-powered features and launches a ChatGPT integration for natural-language search.

Business model

Leboncoin’s classic model is a freemium classifieds marketplace, not a transactional first-party retailer — it is almost entirely third-party (3P). For individuals, posting an ad is free and there is no commission on the sale price of a private listing. Revenue historically comes from: (1) paid visibility “options” that boost or refresh an ad; (2) professional accounts and ad-posting fees for the ~500,000 businesses on the platform; and (3) display advertising. This is why parent Adevinta has argued Leboncoin sits outside France’s 3% digital-services tax — it “doesn’t monetise commission.” More recently Leboncoin layered on a “secured payment” transaction service with shipping, charging service fees (buyer-side on private sales; category-based commissions of roughly 3-10%+ on certain goods), and raised those fees in 2025 — a notable shift toward transactional monetisation.

Why it succeeded

  • First-mover local network effects. By copying Blocket’s proven playbook early and staying relentlessly generalist and local, Leboncoin captured critical mass on both supply and demand before competitors, becoming a self-reinforcing default (per the HBS Digital Innovation analysis, penetration exceeding 70% of the French population).
  • Free for individuals. Charging neither listing fees nor sale commissions to private sellers removed all friction to supply, seeding an enormous inventory that pulled in buyers — monetising attention and professionals instead.
  • Trust and breadth. Investments in secure payments, algorithmic screening and buyer/seller ratings addressed the scam problem endemic to classifieds, while expansion into cars (reinforced by the Argus acquisition), property, jobs and fashion made it a one-stop platform.
  • Strong parent and capital. Backing from Schibsted, then Adevinta, and now a Permira/Blackstone consortium gave it capital to acquire verticals and invest in product (including 100+ AI features and a 2026 ChatGPT integration) while defending its position against challengers like Vinted.

Notable facts

  • Revenue reached ~€1 billion (TTC) in France in 2024, up ~10% year over year from ~€909 million in 2023.
  • Around 22 million French people bought or sold at least one item on the platform in 2024, for an estimated €27 billion in goods (excluding real estate).
  • ~28-30 million monthly unique visitors; more than one French person in two uses it each month.
  • Over 400,000 new listings posted daily and tens of millions of live ads at any time.
  • ~500,000 professional users; ~15% of French companies use the platform.
  • Received a ~€39 million French digital-services (“GAFA”) tax assessment, which Adevinta disputed on the grounds that Leboncoin does not earn commission.
