Overview
Poshmark is a US social marketplace for buying and selling new and secondhand fashion, accessories, home decor, beauty, and electronics. Founded in 2011 in Redwood City, California, it built a peer-to-peer (C2C) model where anyone can list items from their phone in minutes and where discovery is driven by social features — following sellers, sharing listings, and joining themed shopping events. After going public on Nasdaq in 2021, Poshmark was acquired by South Korean internet giant Naver Corporation in January 2023 for an enterprise value of roughly US$1.2 billion, and now operates as a standalone Naver subsidiary under founding CEO Manish Chandra.
What they’re known for
Poshmark’s signature is turning resale into a social activity rather than a transactional listing site. Instead of a static catalog, the platform runs on community behaviors: sellers “share” each other’s listings to their followers, buyers follow “closets” they like, and everyone can join Posh Parties — real-time, themed virtual shopping events. In 2024 the company extended this into Posh Party LIVE, merging live video “Posh Shows” (with live auctions and hand-picked curator hosts) with the millions of listings in seller closets. This community-and-curation angle — “discovery-based social shopping” — is exactly what Naver cited as the reason for the acquisition, and it distinguishes Poshmark from inventory-holding or pure-search resale rivals.
History
- 2011 — Founded by Manish Chandra, Tracy Sun, Chetan Pungaliya, and Gautam Golwala; launched as a mobile-first social selling app.
- 2010–2011 — Investor Navin Chaddha (Mayfield) backs the idea after Chandra bets that the iPhone and Instagram would accelerate mobile and social commerce.
- 2017–2019 — Expands beyond women’s fashion into men’s, kids, home, and international markets (Canada, then Australia).
- January 2021 — IPO on Nasdaq under ticker POSH; shares surged on the first day of trading.
- October 2022 — Naver Corporation agrees to acquire Poshmark for ~US$1.2 billion (US$17.90/share).
- January 2023 — Acquisition closes; Poshmark delists from Nasdaq and becomes a Naver subsidiary, keeping its brand, workforce, and Redwood City HQ.
- June 2024 — Launches Posh Party LIVE, a themed live-shopping experience.
- October 2024 — Rolls out a new split buyer/seller fee structure, then reverses it within about two weeks after seller backlash, returning to the classic 20% seller fee.
Business model
Poshmark is a pure third-party (3P) marketplace — it holds no inventory; sellers supply all goods, which Naver highlighted as an attractive “inventory-light” model. Revenue comes primarily from a seller commission: for items sold at US$15 or more, Poshmark takes a flat 20% of the sale price; for items under US$15, it charges a flat US$2.95 fee. Commissions account for roughly 85% of revenue. Additional streams include advertising, shipping-label programs (buyers typically pay a flat shipping fee, e.g. ~US$7.97 per order), and a wholesale portal with volume-based commissions of about 15–25%. In October 2024 the company briefly experimented with a 5.99% + tiered flat fee split between buyers and sellers to improve transparency, but abandoned it after sellers reported sharp sales declines and reverted to the 20% model.
Why it succeeded
Poshmark’s success came from identifying and building around a genuine behavior shift rather than chasing market size. As Mayfield’s account of the company argues, the founders recognized early that smartphones and social feeds would make commerce social and mobile — so they made sharing and following the core mechanics, turning ordinary users into promoters who continuously resurface each other’s listings. This created cheap, community-driven distribution and high engagement (repeat buying from the same seller is common), which is hard for catalog-style competitors to replicate. The inventory-light 3P model let it scale to 80M+ users and 200M+ listings without carrying stock or authentication overhead on most items. That durable, community-first franchise — plus a large US buyer base — is precisely what made Poshmark worth ~US$1.2B to Naver, which valued its discovery-based social platform and planned to layer on its own search, image-recognition, and live-commerce technology. Notably, Poshmark weathered a sector where several resale peers struggled badly (The RealReal’s shares fell sharply post-IPO), underscoring the resilience of its asset-light social model.
Notable facts
- Acquired by Naver in January 2023 for an enterprise value of ~US$1.2 billion — Naver’s largest US acquisition to that point.
- Roughly 80 million+ registered users and 200 million+ available listings.
- Online GMV of about US$1.63 billion in 2024; net revenue estimated near US$1.9 billion in 2025 (ECDB).
- ~93% of revenue comes from the US; ~91% of sales are fashion; the marketplace is essentially 100% third-party GMV.
- Seller commission: 20% on items US$15+, flat US$2.95 under US$15.
- Over 1 million Posh Shows had been hosted before Posh Party LIVE launched; sellers earning US$100K+/year grew nearly 50% after live features rolled out.
- The October 2024 fee overhaul was walked back in about two weeks after CEO Manish Chandra acknowledged buyers “shifted their spending from orders to fees.”
