Overview
Shopee is Southeast Asia’s largest e-commerce marketplace, launched in Singapore in February 2015 as the e-commerce arm of Sea Limited (NYSE: SE), the Singapore-based technology conglomerate founded by Forrest Li that also owns the Garena gaming business and the Monee (formerly SeaMoney) digital-finance business. Built app-first to exploit the region’s very high mobile penetration, Shopee operates a hybrid B2C and C2C platform across Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan, and has since expanded into Latin America — most notably Brazil, where it has become the clear number-two behind Mercado Livre.
What they’re known for
Shopee is famous for turning shopping into entertainment. Its “shoppertainment” formula — in-app games that reward virtual coins, livestream selling (Shopee Live), flash sales, and marquee double-date mega-sales like 9.9, 11.11 and 12.12 — drove massive engagement among price-sensitive, mobile-first consumers. Combined with heavy free-shipping subsidies, aggressive localization (country-specific teams, local payments and logistics), and celebrity ambassadors like Cristiano Ronaldo, this playbook let Shopee overtake incumbents such as Lazada despite entering the market later. It commanded roughly 52% of Southeast Asian e-commerce GMV in 2024.
History
- 2009 — Forrest Li founds Garena in Singapore (the future Sea Limited).

- 2016 — Introduces Shopee University seller-education program.
- 2017 — Parent rebrands from Garena to Sea Limited and IPOs on the NYSE (the first major U.S. IPO from a Southeast Asian tech firm); Shopee launches Shopee Mall for brands.
- 2019 — Enters Brazil, its first Latin American market; signs Cristiano Ronaldo as global ambassador; opens six-story regional HQ at Singapore Science Park.
- 2022 — Shopee reaches positive adjusted EBITDA (US$196.1M in Q4) as Sea pivots from growth-at-all-costs to profitability.
- 2023 — Recognized as Southeast Asia’s largest e-commerce platform, with US$47.9B GMV.
- 2024 — GMV surpasses US$100 billion; Shopee leads SEA with ~52% platform GMV share.

Business model
Shopee is predominantly a third-party (3P) marketplace: independent sellers and brands list products and Shopee monetizes the transactions rather than holding inventory itself. Revenue comes from a marketplace take rate (transaction/commission fees plus payment and shipping fees), advertising and seller-services (paid placement, Shopee Ads), and adjacent fintech and logistics services via the wider Sea ecosystem. The blended take rate has been rising as Sea prioritizes monetization: the marketplace take rate climbed from about 12.4% in 2024 to roughly 13.0% in 2025, and e-commerce service revenue over GMV improved from 10.8% to 11.4%. Shopee Mall adds a curated B2C brand layer on top of the C2C base.
Why it succeeded
Shopee’s rise is a case study in mobile-first localization and engagement-led growth. As the Eye on Asia analysis notes, it bet on the ~90% of the region accessing the internet via smartphones and built an app-first experience while rivals were web-centric. Deep localization — country teams, local banks and logistics, free-shipping thresholds, and celebrity endorsements — made it feel native in each market. Its gamified “shoppertainment” and year-round mega-sales manufactured habitual engagement rather than one-off purchases. Critically, Sea Limited had the gaming cash flows and public-market capital to subsidize growth for years, then flipped to disciplined monetization: as The Wolf of Harcourt Street observes, Shopee stopped burning cash to gain share and is now expanding margins while still taking the lion’s share of new regional GMV — of the ~US$14B added regionally in 2024, Shopee captured about US$12B.
Notable facts
- US$127.4B GMV in 2025, up 26.8% year-on-year, with roughly 400M active buyers and ~20M sellers.
- Recorded US$28.6B GMV in Q1 2025 alone (up 21.5% YoY) on 3.1B gross orders — record highs at the time.
- Holds ~52% of Southeast Asian e-commerce GMV (2024), ahead of TikTok Shop and Lazada; the top three control ~84% of the region.
- Marketplace take rate rose to ~13% in 2025 from ~12.4% in 2024 as monetization improved.
- In Brazil, Shopee is the clear number-two by market share (~11–12%) behind Mercado Livre, having entered only in late 2019.
- Parent Sea Limited reported ~US$16.8B revenue in 2024; Shopee is its largest segment.
