Overview
The RealReal is the world’s largest online marketplace for authenticated, resale luxury goods. Founded in 2011 by e-commerce entrepreneur Julie Wainwright and based in San Francisco, the company takes consigned pre-owned designer apparel, handbags, jewelry, watches, fine art, and home goods, authenticates and prices each item in-house, then sells it on behalf of the consignor. It operates an e-commerce platform plus a handful of physical retail stores and dedicated authentication centers in New Jersey and Arizona. The RealReal went public on the Nasdaq under the ticker REAL in 2019 and is led by co-founder Rati Sahi Levesque as president and CEO (since October 2024).
What they’re known for
Its signature is expert human authentication at scale. Unlike peer-to-peer resale apps, The RealReal never lets sellers ship directly to buyers — every item passes through the company’s own facilities, where hundreds of in-house gemologists, horologists, and brand authenticators inspect goods with the stated goal of keeping counterfeits off the market. That “we authenticate everything” promise is the core of its brand and the main reason luxury shoppers trust buying second-hand designer goods sight-unseen. The same promise has also been its biggest reputational liability (see below).
History
- 2011 — Julie Wainwright founds The RealReal, initially running consignment out of her Bay Area home.
- 2018 — Raises a $115M Series G at a ~$745M valuation.
- 2019 (April) — Authorizes new share sale valuing the company above $1 billion, entering the “unicorn club.”
- 2019 (June) — Completes IPO on the Nasdaq (ticker: REAL).
- 2019 (Oct–Nov) — Forbes and CNBC investigations question the authentication process; an investor class action follows.
- 2022 (June) — Founder Julie Wainwright abruptly resigns as CEO after 11 years.
- 2023 (Feb) — John Koryl (ex–Neiman Marcus, Canadian Tire) hired as CEO to lead a turnaround.
- 2024 (Oct) — Koryl departs; co-founder Rati Sahi Levesque becomes president and CEO.
- 2025 — Surpasses $2 billion in annual GMV and posts positive Adjusted EBITDA in every quarter for the first time.
Business model
The RealReal is a consignment (managed third-party) marketplace, not a pure peer-to-peer platform. Consignors send in items; The RealReal handles authentication, pricing (using AI plus human experts), photography, listing, shipping, payments, and customer service, then pays the consignor a share of the sale. Its revenue is primarily the commission it keeps on consigned goods, supplemented by a smaller amount of first-party (direct/vendor) inventory. Commission rates are tiered and rise with the value a seller consigns, so consignors of higher-value goods keep a larger percentage. Reported revenue reflects the take (commission + direct sales), which is why GMV ($2.13B in 2025) is roughly 3x reported revenue ($693M). Gross margin is high for a retailer (~75% in 2025) because most revenue is commission rather than the cost of goods.
Why it succeeded
The RealReal built a defensible position by owning the hardest, most trust-sensitive part of luxury resale: authentication and logistics. By taking physical possession of every item, it removed the buyer’s fear of fakes that plagues open peer-to-peer marketplaces — a differentiator emphasized in Julie Wainwright’s founder story (Forbes) and its path to unicorn status and IPO (TechCrunch). It rode structural tailwinds — sustainability/circular-fashion demand and mainstream acceptance of buying pre-owned luxury. After years of losses, the current management team focused on unit economics (higher-value consignment, take-rate discipline, operational efficiency), which delivered its first year of consistent positive Adjusted EBITDA and over $2.1B in GMV in 2025 (StockTitan). The authentication promise remains its moat — but only because it survived a major credibility test: 2019 investigations found many items were vetted by lightly trained “copywriters” under heavy daily quotas, leading to counterfeits slipping through and an $11M investor lawsuit settlement (Retail Dive). The company has since expanded dedicated authentication centers and expert staff.
Notable facts
- FY2025 GMV of $2.13 billion, up 16% year over year; total revenue of $693 million, up 15%.
- FY2025 Adjusted EBITDA of $42 million (6.1% of revenue) — the first year with positive Adjusted EBITDA in every quarter.
- FY2025 gross margin of ~74.6%, reflecting the commission-based model.
- More than 40 million members; has sold tens of millions of items since 2011.
- Authentication centers in New Jersey and Arizona staffed by hundreds of gemologists, horologists, and brand authenticators.
- Paid $11 million to settle a 2019 investor class action over its authentication claims.
- IPO’d on the Nasdaq (REAL) in June 2019; reached a valuation above $1 billion earlier that year.
