Overview
Marktplaats (“marketplace” in Dutch) is the Netherlands’ dominant online classifieds platform, where individuals and businesses post ads to buy and sell mostly second-hand goods — cars, furniture, electronics, clothing, and more. Founded in 1999 and long the country’s most-visited website, it reaches roughly 8 million monthly users in a nation of about 17 million, an exceptional level of market penetration. After 16 years under eBay’s ownership, it became part of the Norwegian classifieds group Adevinta in 2020, which was itself taken private by a Blackstone/Permira-led consortium in 2024.
What they’re known for
Marktplaats is famous as the near-universal Dutch marketplace for used goods — the local equivalent of Craigslist or eBay Classifieds, but with far deeper cultural saturation. It is essentially a national institution for second-hand trade: at its peak the platform saw roughly four ads placed every second (about 350,000 per day), and Dutch residents create an average of about seven listings a year each. Its signature model is free-to-list classifieds with local, in-person or shipped C2C transactions, rather than a fee-per-sale auction house.
History
- 1999 — Marktplaats.nl created by René van Mullem (with Marc Klaasens); listings offered free of charge. Later that year it was sold to Het Goed B.V., a Dutch chain of charity/thrift shops.
- 2004 — By this point Marktplaats is the most popular website in the Netherlands with millions of users; on 10 November 2004 eBay acquires it from Het Goed for €225 million.
- 2010s — Continues to dominate Dutch classifieds; hits milestone ad-volume figures and adds premium features and “buy direct” fixed-price purchasing.
- 2016 — Reaches 1 billion classified ads placed (the billionth ad being a drum set from a Rotterdam seller); took 12 years to reach 500 million ads, only 4 more to double it.
- 2020 — eBay sells its entire Classifieds Group (Marktplaats, mobile.de, Kijiji, Gumtree, etc.) to Adevinta in a ~$9.2 billion cash-and-shares deal; eBay takes a ~44% stake in Adevinta. Prosus had bid separately for Marktplaats but lost.
- 2021 — Adevinta completes the acquisition (June 2021), becoming the world’s leading pure-play online classifieds group with #1 positions in 16 countries.
- 2023–2024 — A private-equity consortium led by Blackstone and Permira (with General Atlantic and TCV) offers NOK 115/share (~€14 billion / NOK 141bn equity value); the buyout completes in 2024, taking Adevinta private.
Business model
Marktplaats runs a freemium classifieds model rather than a transactional marketplace. Basic ads for private sellers are free; the platform earns revenue primarily from:
- Ad promotion / visibility upsells — paid features to highlight or “boost” (“dialing up”) a listing to a better position in results.
- Professional and business seller subscriptions — Marktplaats Pro / Marktplaats Zakelijk accounts for dealers and businesses.
- Advertising — display advertising across the high-traffic site.
- Transactional features — a “buy direct” fixed-price purchase flow with shipping, layering some transaction-based monetization onto the classifieds core.
Because it is a classifieds site, its take rate on the underlying goods sold is far lower than a 1P retailer or a fee-per-sale marketplace; the value is in scale of audience and listings, not merchant-of-record sales. It is a third-party (3P) platform — Marktplaats never owns the inventory.
Why it succeeded
- First-mover scale and network effects — By 2004 it was already the Netherlands’ most popular website; buyers went where the listings were and sellers listed where the buyers were, a flywheel that made it extremely hard to dislodge (Wikipedia, ExpoJump).
- Local focus over global ambition — Unlike eBay’s cross-border auction model, Marktplaats emphasized local, in-person Dutch transactions and categories (cars, property, local services), fitting Dutch buying habits (ExpoJump).
- Free, frictionless listing — Free basic ads drove enormous supply, reaching ~4 ads per second at peak (eCommerce News).
- Deep-pocketed owners — eBay’s 16 years of ownership, then Adevinta’s classifieds specialization, kept it well-resourced and a #1 asset in its market (DutchNews, Adevinta).
Notable facts
- Reaches roughly 8 million monthly users in a country of ~17 million — among the highest marketplace penetration rates anywhere.
- At peak, about 350,000 new ads per day (~4 per second) and ~10 million ads per month.
- Crossed 1 billion classified ads placed in 2016.
- eBay bought it in 2004 for €225 million; it was part of the $9.2 billion Adevinta–eBay Classifieds deal in 2020.
- Adevinta (its parent) was taken private in 2024 in a deal valuing the group at roughly €14 billion (NOK 141bn equity value).
- Named among eBay Classifieds’ top revenue-generating brands and the classifieds “kingpin” in the Netherlands (OnlineMarketplaces).
- Estimated annual revenue of around €100 million (ExpoJump estimate) — high traffic but lower transactional GMV than Bol.com or Amazon.nl in the Dutch market (trade.gov).
