Overview

Mercari is Japan’s largest consumer-to-consumer (C2C) resale marketplace, operating a mobile-first app where individuals buy and sell secondhand goods directly. Founded in Tokyo in February 2013 by serial entrepreneur Shintaro Yamada (with co-founders Ryo Ishizuka and Tommy Tomishima), the company became Japan’s first startup unicorn and, in 2018, the country’s largest IPO of the year. Beyond its dominant home market, Mercari has run a US marketplace since 2014 and operates fintech subsidiaries Merpay (payments) and Mercoin (crypto). It is headquartered in the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in Minato, Tokyo, and trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticker 4385.

What they’re known for

Mercari is famous as Japan’s original mobile flea-market app — a frictionless, phone-first way for ordinary people to list secondhand items in minutes and sell them peer-to-peer. It effectively created and then came to dominate Japan’s online C2C resale category, holding over 40% market share and more than 23 million monthly active users domestically. Its signature is simplicity: no listing fees, a flat commission, integrated shipping (with anonymous delivery options), and a built-in wallet (Merpay) that lets sellers spend their proceeds. Culturally, it is credited with mainstreaming the “thrift economy” and reuse culture in Japan.

History

  • 2013 — Kouzoh, Inc. (later renamed Mercari, Inc.) founded by Shintaro Yamada in February; the app launches in July for iOS and Android.
  • 2014 — Launches its US marketplace to pursue international expansion.
  • 2016 — Raises ~$75M (Series D) at a $1B+ valuation, becoming Japan’s first pre-IPO startup unicorn.
  • 2017 — Expands into the UK market.
  • 2018 — IPOs on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Mothers market (June 19), raising ~$1.2B in Japan’s largest IPO of the year; shares surged ~77% on debut to a ~$7.4B market cap.
  • 2019 — Launches Merpay mobile payments service.
  • 2024 — Restructures US fee model (shifting cost onto buyers), which backfires and triggers user exodus and layoffs.
  • 2025 — Reverses course with a split buyer/seller fee model (effective Jan 6); Yamada steps in to directly lead the US business; Mercari US posts its first-ever full-year profit (JPY 900M) for FY ending June 30.
  • 2026 — Jeff LeBeau named CEO of Mercari US (effective July 1) as the turnaround continues.

Business model

Mercari is a pure third-party (3P) C2C marketplace — it holds no inventory and simply connects individual buyers and sellers. Its core revenue is a flat selling commission of 10% of the sale price, automatically deducted at checkout, with no listing fees. In the US, following the 2024–2025 fee overhaul, fees are split between buyers and sellers, and buyers pay a buyer-protection fee (around 3.25%) on top of the item price. Additional revenue comes from payment/withdrawal fees, optional seller promotion tools, authentication services, and its adjacent fintech businesses — Merpay (payments/credit) and Mercoin (crypto) — which monetize the balances sellers accumulate in the Mercari wallet.

Why it succeeded

Mercari won by being mobile-first and radically simple at exactly the moment Japanese smartphone adoption took off, letting anyone list an item in a couple of minutes rather than navigating a desktop auction site. It removed the classic C2C frictions: no listing fees, integrated and anonymous shipping, escrow-style buyer protection, and a wallet that recirculates proceeds back into the platform. That combination produced a powerful network effect and durable liquidity — over 40% of Japan’s online C2C market and JPY 1.1 trillion in annual GMV, per its Japan operations and Wikipedia’s overview. Its 2016 unicorn round and record 2018 IPO (covered by TechCrunch and PYMNTS) gave it the capital to entrench that lead. The US business struggled for a decade and stumbled badly on its 2024 fee experiment, but the disciplined 2025 correction — reverting to a split fee model and tightening management — delivered its first-ever full-year US profit (Value Added Resource), showing the model can reach profitability once liquidity and pricing are balanced.
